Hank's Haute Dogs

Umami and Elle were out and about on a run to Jelly's Kakaako and decided to Hank's Haute Dogs.  It's an unassuming place on Coral Street, a half block mauka of Ala Moana Boulevard.  But it's nationally known due to an appearance on Diners Drive-Ins and Dive and a 2009 mention in Bon Appetit for being one of top ten new places for hot dogs.
Elle Hanging Out in Front of Hank's; Looking All Cool
Elle always get the Chicago ("Genuine Chicago Vienna all-beef hot dog with the famous snap!") with Everything (yellow mustard, raw onion, very green relish, tomato, dill pickle, celery salt and sport hot peppers).   $4.95.  Though he considered going for the Saturday Special: Duck & Foie Gras, Umami opted for the Chicago with everything as well.

Chicago with Everything (Note the Really Green Relish . . . it really is Really Green)
It is, of course, fabulous, but be warned, the peppers are really hot.  Better off taking them out, and eating a bit with each of bite of hot dog.
"Awesome French Fries"
The Awesome French Fries (Castle Rock potatoes, twice cooked, crispy) ($2.75) were a little too crispy for Umami's taste.  Maybe it was an extremely crispy batch, but you've been warned.  The Haute Dipping Sauce, Curry Ketchup, was excellent.

Umami's definitely going back.

La Taqueira de Ramiro

Umami's friend, Trish, really likes Mexican food so, having visited Maria Bonita a couple of weeks ago, this time decided on a little place on Fort Street Mall called La Taqueira de Ramiro.  It is a very straightforward Mexican fast food place, with burritos and enchilada plates.  Umami and Trish both opted for the fried burrito plate, wet ($7.50).
Fried Burrito, Wet
You get your choice of filling (Trish = carnitas, Umami = chile verde) in a large flour tortilla that is then fried on a griddle, not deep fried.  Plate includes the red sauce (i.e. "wet"), rice, your choice of black beans, pinto beans or refried beans, large scoops of salsa, guacamole, sour cream, and a drizzle of hot sauce (optional).  All very good and a tremendous value.
Chile Verde, Interior
A plate could easily be shared by two people.  Trish very sensibly saved half of hers for "later."  Umami powered through and was very nearly senseless later (but he perservered).  Maybe next time he'll try the vegetarian option.  And maybe go a little earlier, as the place gets crowded and seating is limited.

Hinone Mizunone

The name of this restaurant, Hinone Mizunone, reminds Umami of the scene in Caddyshack where Bill Murray talks about caddying for the Dalai Lama:   "He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-lagunga."
Entry
Hinone Mizunone . . . Hinone Mizunone.  Is actually a Japanese restaurant built around the former Taco Bell at King and Keeaumoku.  It's a solid little local-style Japanese restaurant, with two choice teishokus starting at $16.75.  Umami had the Chicken Katsu and Maguro Sashimi for $18.75 (the sashimi is an additional $2).  It's a lot of food . . .
Chicken Katsu and Maguro Sashimi Teishoku
Three Small Things (clockwise from top):
Nori, Takuan, Shoyu Pork and Potato (cold)

"First of all, please enjoy it with the beer"
Chicken Katsu
The Chicken Katsu is tasty enough, the breading is a little on the coarser side, and the dish comes with the sauce already on it.  The sauce is different from the tonkatsu sauce that's on the table, lighter in color and a little sweeter.  A generous amount of salad is included.
Rice
They make a big deal of the rice at Hinone Mizunone.  It's kamadaki gohan, which is to say, cooked in a traditional method (i.e., in a pot).  Each diner gets their own little serving container (the rice bowl proper is on the teishoku tray) of perfectly cooked, not too sticky, not over or undercooked, rice.  Hard to say that it's exceptional rice, but when you don't eat a lot of white rice (and Umami doesn't), it's at least very good.
Maguro Sashimi
The sashimi serving was generous, with six large pieces of fish, served with a chiso leaf, daikon, and konbu.
Japanese Hamburger Steak with Demi Glace
Umama, not Umami, had the Japanese Hamburger Steak.  The hamburger was fine ground, with a bit of a ketchup flavor that made it taste like meatloaf.  Served with a a demi glace and sunny side up egg, Umama should have just dumped her rice in the bowl and made a loco moco.
Finished!
All told, it was a lot of food, decently prepared, for a very attractive price.  Apropos of nothing, Umami is reminded of the rest of Bill Murray's Caddyshack Dalai Lama quote:
"So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice."
Nice indeed.

Aloha, Foodland (Koko Marina Shopping Center)

The Last Purchase
Foodland at the Koko Marina Shopping Center closes July 10, 2011.  Umami and Elle stopped in to look around one last time.  There are some empty shelves, but it's not as though the place is vacant.   Found some deli dressings marked down and decided to try them.  The remoulade has some heat, the gournaise was very peppery (which Elle liked) and the deli dressing (olive oil and herbs) was also good on pasta.  Sad to see Foodland go.

Mega Moco
Umami and Elle wandered into the Downbeat Diner the other night and had to get the Mega Moco ($15).  It's basically two loco mocos = two Big Island beef patties, four eggs, bacon, sauteed mushrooms and onions, brown gravy and rice.  Burgers need some breading and/or egg.  Scary.  Awesome.  Scary Awesome.

Quick Pic: Fort Street Cafe Pad Thai with Garlic Chicken

Umami used to go to this place when he worked at 1132 Bishop (it's just across Fort Street Mall).  He always like the food quality and value, but since it's a bit of a walk now, he doesn't get there as frequently as before.
Pad Thai with Garlic Chicken
Every once in a while, though, he swings by for their daily special Pad Thai with Garlic Chicken ($6).  The pad thai is plenty tasty by itself, and the garlic chicken is sweetly garlicky.  Comes with garnishes on the side (lime, cilantro, peanuts).  Hit it with some Sriracha and it's a very flavorful lunch indeed.

Breakfast is really good deal for local style plates (rice, eggs, meat) all around $3, but Umami really likes the fried rice with an egg (and sriracha, for about $4).

Be warned, though, because it's so near Hawaii Pacific University and because the food is so inexpensive, there can be a bit of a line at lunchtime.  Plan accordingly.

Lunchwagon Wars: Melt

Melt recently returned from hiatus, so Umami, Makizushi, and Ms. D decided to get a couple of sandwiches and split them three ways.
Pastrami Melt
First up, the Pastrami Melt ($8) - Pastrami, Gruyere, Dijon Mustard on Grilled Rye.  Umami's had this one before and really likes it.
Pastrami Melt - Cross Section
Makizushi likes grilled cheese sandwiches and wanted to try the Triple Melt ($6) - Vermont Cheddar, Dutch Gouda, and Gruyere on Sourdough.
Triple Melt
Umami is partial to Kraft American Singles and White Bread, so the Triple Melt seems like a wild extravagance.  But it is really good.  Especially with the (Homemade) Fresh Tomato Soup ($2).
Fresh Tomato Soup
It's not so much a tomato soup as it is a tomato bisque and, actually, Makizushi and Ms. D thought it was  even more like a marinara dipping sauce for deep fried mozzarella.
Dunk!
So, of course, the natural thing to do is dunk the Triple Melt into the soup.  It's hard to beat fried/grilled cheese/bread and tomato soup/bisque.  Umami loves it.  Dr. Lois, not so much, but, then, she doesn't have to know.
